We are quick to turn beautiful surfaces into objects—a textile, a print, a specimen, an idea to borrow. But this pattern cannot be separated from the life that made it. The shell grows with the tortoise, records time and pressure, protects vulnerability, and remains part of the animal’s body for its entire life.
Maybe beauty becomes more meaningful when we stop treating it as something available to us and remember that it belongs first to the being who is alive.
