What looks like a tiny pink flower is actually a young female larch cone—often called a larch rose—growing beside the tree’s smaller yellow male pollen cones.
Field Notes
I had never considered that a tree could produce visibly different male and female cones, or that the structure that will eventually hold its seeds could begin in such an extravagant shade of pink. We usually recognize cones only after they have become brown, woody, and familiar.
But nature is often most surprising before it reaches the form we know. Everything has earlier versions of itself, and learning to notice them reminds us how much life is happening beyond the small moment in which we usually meet it.
