The hydrothermal fields of Dallol, Ethiopia, are among the most extreme environments ever observed on Earth’s surface. Acidic pools, mineral ridges, and vivid sulfur deposits create a landscape that appears almost impossible. We often move through life believing we understand the shape of the world. Then we encounter an exception—something that doesn’t fit the model—and are reminded that reality is always larger than our imagination.
