Indigo leaves don’t look blue while they’re growing. The color only begins to appear after the plant is broken down and exposed to air, as though the blue has been waiting for the right conditions to reveal itself. It’s strange that one of the richest colors humans have ever used begins inside such an ordinary-looking leaf. Sometimes nature keeps its most astonishing qualities hidden until something changes.
