Field Notes
The house was built to define a boundary. A line between inside and outside. Human and wild. Permanent and temporary.
The tree ignored those distinctions.
Year after year, it continued the same process it had always known. Roots followed water. Branches followed light. The foundation shifted. The window adapted. The structure changed shape around a force that was never trying to win.
We often describe scenes like this as nature “reclaiming” a place, but nature never left. The house was simply a brief addition to an older system already in motion.
Long after human plans fade, ecosystems continue to grow, adapt, and evolve. Not because they are powerful in a dramatic sense, but because they are persistent. Life does not stop. It responds, adjusts, and continues.
In the end, patience can accomplish what force never could.
