From above, the land no longer looks like ground. Salt, water, sediment, and heat divide it into shapes that seem invented—an accidental map drawn without borders, roads, or names.
There are places that remind us how little of the Earth has ever been ordinary. We become familiar with one version of reality and begin mistaking familiarity for the limits of what is possible.
