An animal can look directly at us without becoming fully knowable.
Field Notes
It is so easy to stand in front of an animal and start writing a story about what it feels. We read wisdom, sadness, innocence, love, fear, or recognition into its face, often without noticing how quickly we have filled the silence with ourselves. But every animal is living from inside a life we cannot enter, organized by needs, senses, memories, and meanings that are not our own. Maybe the real wonder is not that we understand them so well, but that two very different beings can meet for a moment in shared attention without one becoming a reflection of the other.
