This caterpillar does not hide the fact that it can hurt you. Its brightness, spines, and jewel-like patterning are not separate from its defense; they are the form its defense takes.
We are often taught to think that softness should look harmless and boundaries should look severe. Nature is less divided. Something can be delicate and dangerous, beautiful and untouchable, without contradiction. A boundary does not make a living thing less beautiful. Sometimes it is part of what allows that beauty to remain intact.
