We can genuinely believe that we are helping, protecting, loving, or doing what is right while remaining unaware of the deeper need guiding the gesture. The conscious explanation may not be a lie; it may simply be incomplete.
Perhaps self-knowledge begins when we stop treating good intentions as final proof of goodness and become curious about what the action is also doing for us.
