Some places remember us more completely than we remember ourselves.
Field Notes
We often imagine that we outgrow our former selves. The child who jumped from this dock. The teenager who sat here after a heartbreak. The young adult who came looking for answers. But growth may not be a process of leaving those people behind. It may be a process of carrying them forward.
Certain places make this visible. We return after years away and feel old memories rise to the surface, not as reminders of who we were, but as evidence that every version of us still belongs to the story.
The lake reflects the woman sitting here now. But it also seems to reflect everyone she has been. Not trapped in the past. Not waiting to be found. Simply present.
Part of us never leaves the places that helped make us. And perhaps that is something to be grateful for.
