Beneath each toe are countless microscopic structures that draw close enough to a surface for the gecko to cling through contact alone. Its hold does not depend on force.
Perhaps attachment was never meant to feel like being trapped. Some forms of closeness can hold us without confining us, then loosen gently when it is time to move.
