We have become remarkably good at answering.
A sentence is barely finished before we’ve decided what it means.
We reply.
We summarize.
We reduce people, places, and ideas into something small enough to respond to immediately.
But understanding is rarely immediate.
A mountain doesn’t reveal itself in the first second you see it. Neither does a conversation, a book, a person, or a life.
Most things become richer with context.
Sometimes the wisest response is to keep listening.
