Every encounter reveals one facet while withholding countless others.
Field Notes
Standing beside a giant sequoia, it is easy to feel as though you are seeing the tree. But you are only seeing one surface of an organism too large for a single perspective to contain. Its canopy disappears beyond view. Its roots spread through unseen soil. Its opposite side remains hidden. Its history stretches across centuries you cannot witness. The encounter is real, but it is partial. Perhaps this is true of everything we meet. Every person, place, animal, and landscape offers a face to our attention while keeping countless others beyond reach. Seeing is not the completion of knowing. It is the beginning of a relationship with mystery.
