Grain begins as wind, rain, soil, and sunlight. Somewhere along the way it can become a formula—measured, accelerated, stabilized, conditioned, and reproduced until every loaf is expected to be indistinguishable from the last. None of that is obvious when we’re making a sandwich. But it’s curious how often our civilization takes something that once required patience and turns it into something designed for efficiency. The loaf still looks like bread. The process that made it is another story.
