Modern buildings often begin by flattening, clearing, and separating themselves from the land. But the earth already offers many of the qualities we spend energy trying to recreate. Just a few feet below the surface, temperatures remain remarkably stable throughout the year, providing natural insulation against both summer heat and winter cold. Instead of dominating a hillside, architecture can gently settle into it—borrowing the earth’s ability to cool, insulate, and protect. The landscape isn’t an obstacle to overcome. It’s part of the design.
