Much of what we call style may be less invention than recognition. We keep returning to feathers, flowers, shells, scales, and animal markings—translating ancient patterns into fabric, jewelry, makeup, and dress.
Perhaps fashion began with the desire to carry a little of nature’s beauty on our own bodies.
