Field Notes
When we encounter an image, we often experience it as a direct expression of the person we see. We imagine a singular voice, a singular identity, a singular message. Yet many public images are collective creations. Photographers, stylists, makeup artists, producers, editors, retouchers, creative directors, assistants, and technicians all contribute decisions that shape what eventually reaches us. The finished photograph appears to speak with one voice, but it is often a chorus. What we attribute to an individual may, in reality, be the work of an entire ecosystem acting together.
