We learn how to become appealing—how to look right, say the right thing, and present a version of ourselves someone might want. But being desirable and knowing how to love are not the same skill.
Love asks quieter things of us: staying curious when we feel certain, listening without preparing a defense, repairing what we have damaged, and allowing another person to remain fully themselves. Perhaps the most important work begins after we are chosen.
