Softness is often less a personality trait than a condition created by being with someone who does not make tenderness feel dangerous.
Field Notes
There are environments that make us harden without even noticing—our voice tightens, our body braces, our feelings become organized before they can be felt. And then there are people around whom something in us loosens. The edges blur. We do not have to defend every emotion before it rises. We can be uncertain, impressionable, quiet, and still feel safe.
To be held well is not to be fixed or managed. It is to be met in a way that lets us soften without disappearing. Like being in water, where everything sharp begins to melt at the edges, love can create the conditions in which vulnerability stops feeling like danger and starts feeling like rest.
