Field Notes
It can feel deeply reassuring to find someone who seems certain about what is true, what matters, and what should happen next. We begin placing our hope in their judgment, looking to them for direction, and allowing their confidence to quiet questions we do not yet know how to answer for ourselves.
This can happen in relationships, families, workplaces, spiritual communities, political movements, or around admired public figures. Gradually, another person may become more than someone we trust. They become the source of our identity, our decisions, and even the meaning we give to our lives. We are relieved of doubt, but only because we have also handed away part of our freedom.
