We often mistake our survival strategies for our personality.
Field Notes
Most of us don’t wake up one morning and decide to hide who we are.
It happens quietly.
A joke you laugh along with, even though it hurts.
A part of yourself you stop showing because it gets dismissed.
The version of you that learns to be agreeable. Easygoing. Pretty. Funny. Unbothered.
The one that keeps the peace.
The one that doesn’t make things awkward.
Over time, those small adjustments begin to feel less like choices and more like your personality.
From the outside, that can look like confidence.
From the inside, it can feel like wearing something that’s glued to your skin.
The hardest part isn’t taking it off.
It’s realizing you were wearing it at all.
And when it finally begins to come away, it rarely peels off all at once. It loosens slowly, one small layer at a time, until you begin to recognize the face that was there before anyone told you who you needed to be.
