Red and turquoise can seem almost argumentative when we imagine them as human choices. One is warm, one is cool; one advances, one recedes. Yet across this small body, they do not compete. They become a single pattern because the leafhopper never learned that they were supposed to clash.
Perhaps some opposites exist more firmly in our categories than they do in the world. Life keeps arranging difference into forms of coherence we might never have designed ourselves.
