A painting can hold our attention on one ordinary thing long enough for it to become strange, complex, and newly alive.
Field Notes
The apple has not changed. What changes is the quality of our looking. Inside the frame, we remain with its color, weight, bruising, texture, and shape until something familiar begins to feel inexhaustible.
The question is why we reserve this kind of attention for art. What might the world become if we looked at an ordinary apple, a tree, an animal, or another person with the same patience we bring to a painting?
