Collecting specimens has taught us remarkable things about the natural world. But every plant, fungus, and animal is also part of a much larger conversation. We can measure its weight, map its genes, and describe its anatomy, yet still miss the relationships that make it what it is. Sometimes knowledge comes from looking closer. Other times it comes from stepping back far enough to see that nothing in nature exists alone.
