Even when we choose plants and try to cause less harm, our lives are still sustained by other life. Roots are pulled, seeds are harvested, and habitats are changed. We belong to an exchange far older than us: one life nourishes another, and what remains returns to insects, scavengers, soil, roots, and lives we may never see.
Perhaps the goal is not purity, but respect and attentiveness—to reduce suffering wherever we can, take no more than we need, waste as little as possible, and remember that nothing sustaining us was ever merely a thing.
