The deepest reading begins when a book stops giving us something to know and starts showing us something about ourselves.
Field Notes
For me, reading is not about finishing books or collecting ideas I can repeat later. I am looking for the sentence that catches me, unsettles me, and changes what I notice when I finally lift my head.
Knowledge can become another kind of status—something we use to appear intelligent or interesting. But the kind of reading I care about asks for more vulnerability than that. At some point, I stop trying to possess the book and let it read me back: revealing where my vision has narrowed, what I have not yet understood, and how differently the world might be seen.
