A journey older than any traveler.
Field Notes
The butterflies arriving in these trees are not the butterflies that left them.
The migration is carried across generations. One butterfly begins the journey. Another continues it. Another completes it. None lives long enough to hold the entire map.
And yet the route persists.
We often imagine memory as something stored inside an individual mind. Monarchs suggest another possibility. Some forms of knowing may live within relationships, patterns, and continuities that extend beyond any single life.
The migration survives because no butterfly carries it alone.
For thousands of years, a path has been moving across a continent inside a succession of temporary bodies.
Not a traveler.
A traveling pattern.
