Field Notes
Much of nature is stillness. Then, without warning, everything happens at once.
These Arctic hares rise to spar for only a few seconds—a brief contest shaped by instinct, courtship, and survival. Almost immediately, the silence returns, leaving little evidence that anything extraordinary occurred.
Life is often remembered for its dramatic moments, but those moments are held within long stretches of quiet. Perhaps that is what makes them so meaningful. They remind us that wonder doesn’t last because it is loud; it lasts because it is rare.
