There is something unusually generous about a plant that stores so much cooling gel inside its own leaves. We cut it open for burns, irritation, dryness, and all the little accidents skin collects simply by being alive. It is useful without looking engineered for usefulness, which may be part of what makes it so striking. How many other plants are quietly growing their own medicine cabinet?
