Sometimes a scent can change the feeling of a room before anything else has changed.
Field Notes
Sage moves through a space in a way that is difficult to separate from memory. The smoke rises, the scent settles into fabric and air, and the body begins to recognize a familiar sequence: pause, breathe, soften. Over time, the ritual itself can become a kind of sensory doorway into calm.
Smell reaches us before explanation does. A room may still contain the same objects, the same unfinished thoughts, the same life waiting outside it—but for a moment, the senses are given something gentler to follow.
