The Calypso orchid survives by offering the appearance of pollen to a bee, even though there is nothing there to collect.

The bee approaches because the flower has learned how to resemble a promise. Its bright yellow hairs imitate the look of pollen, drawing the bee close enough to carry the orchid’s real pollen onward.
What fascinates me is that deception does not always arrive looking cruel. Sometimes it is beautiful, delicate, and almost impossible to distinguish from nourishment until we have already given it our attention.
