We need a love that lets us rest, and a love that helps us grow.
Field Notes
A person needs somewhere they do not have to perform in order to be worthy. But they also need someone who trusts them enough to offer guidance, set limits, and let them discover what they can do on their own.
Acceptance without belief in our ability to grow can become a quiet form of underestimating us. We may be protected from every difficulty, excused from every responsibility, or kept dependent in the name of love.
But when love is mostly expectation, we begin to feel valued only when we are improving, achieving, or getting things right.
Perhaps mature love holds both: You belong here as you are—and I believe you are capable of more.
