We often imagine the world as a chain: one thing causes the next, and every effect has a single beginning. But nature rarely behaves that way. A hen protects the eggs that become chicks, while those chicks are the reason the nest exists at all. Forests make the rain that feeds the forests. Flowers shape the insects that shape the flowers. Every living thing is both creating and being created at the same time. Perhaps what we call “cause and effect” is simply our way of drawing straight lines through something that has always been circular.
