The dramatic flames, feathers, and painted streaks on these historic tulips weren’t created through careful breeding. They were caused by the tulip breaking virus, which disrupted the flower’s pigments and produced patterns no gardener could intentionally design. The same virus also weakened the plants, making them increasingly rare and difficult to cultivate.
It’s a quiet reminder that nature doesn’t separate beauty from imperfection as neatly as we often do. Sometimes what first appears to be damage becomes the very thing that makes something unforgettable. Not every mark tells the story of something lost.
