Perhaps paying close attention to animals is also a way of practicing humility. It teaches us that the world is always larger than the single perspective through which we happen to experience it.
Field Notes
We often move through life as though the world is arranged around human needs, human meanings, and human ways of sensing. But every small creature is living at the center of an experience we cannot fully enter—following signals we may not perceive, noticing details we pass over, and responding to a world that looks entirely different from its scale.
Attention does not give us complete access to another life. It simply reminds us that our own perspective is not the boundary of reality. Sometimes humility begins with noticing how much is happening beside us without being about us.
