Nothing in nature is only one thing.
Field Notes
A poppy is beautiful before we know its chemistry.
Its petals have inspired artists. Its seeds become food. Its compounds have eased pain during surgery, relieved suffering at the end of life, and transformed modern medicine.
The very same plant has also fueled addiction, overdose, conflict, and grief.
The flower never changes.
Only the ways we encounter it do.
A single living thing can carry extraordinary possibilities at once.
We often divide the world into “good” and “bad,” but nature rarely does.
A plant can feed, heal, intoxicate, comfort, and harm—sometimes all within the same species.
Perhaps the natural world is constantly reminding us that reality is more complex than our categories. The same life that offers relief can also demand responsibility.
