We are often loved by more than we know.
Field Notes
We don’t know whether this infant belongs to the adult beside it.
The photograph offers no answer.
What it reveals instead is something larger than kinship.
In many social species, the work of raising the young is shared. Protection, attention, and care are not always reserved for one’s own offspring. Sometimes another’s child is held, watched over, and cared for as if it were your own.
Imagine what human life would look like if we lived this way more often.
If every child mattered as much as our own. If another family’s joy or struggle felt connected to ours. If success was measured not by how far our children got ahead, but by how well all of them were cared for.
