A real friend does not make you keep earning your place beside them.
Field Notes
For a long time, I confused history with closeness. I thought the people who had known me the longest must know me best, even when I felt unseen, excluded, or made smaller inside the friendship.
Now I think care is simpler and rarer. A friend remains curious about your inner life, listens when you speak, protects your dignity when you are not in the room, and makes space for you without turning belonging into a test. The right friendships do not leave you wondering where you stand. You can feel the answer in how freely you are allowed to be yourself.
