The kitchen was once where we met the living world every single day.
Field Notes
Every meal begins with something that was once alive—a leaf, a root, a fruit, a seed, or another living being. For most of human history, the kitchen was where we gathered around that quiet transformation together, washing, chopping, stirring, waiting, and sharing stories as one form of life became another. It wasn’t simply a place to prepare food. It was where gratitude, patience, and our relationship with the living world naturally became part of everyday life. As our kitchens have become places to reheat, unwrap, and move on, we’ve quietly lost one of the last daily rituals that reminded us where every meal truly begins.
