Many rainforest bromeliads collect rainwater where their leaves overlap, forming tiny natural pools called phytotelmata. Over time, these reservoirs become entire freshwater ecosystems. Mosses, liverworts, algae, fungi, fern gametophytes, microscopic plants, insects, crustaceans, tadpoles, and even small frogs can spend their lives inside a single plant. Each bromeliad becomes a world of its own—quietly suspended in the forest canopy, hidden in plain sight from almost everyone who walks beneath it.
