The things worth pursuing are often the ones that fascinate us long before they make us accomplished.
Field Notes
A painter does not begin by loving the identity of being an artist. She begins by loving paint: the thickness of it, the way colors fold into one another, and the unexpected shade that appears when two pigments meet.
Real devotion often starts this quietly—as curiosity, pleasure, and the desire to keep looking. Before success, usefulness, or recognition, there is simply the feeling that something is alive to us and that we want to stay near it. The work comes later. First comes the fascination.
