Field Notes
A fig is a chamber lined with hundreds of tiny flowers. In many fig species, a female wasp squeezes through a nearly invisible opening, bringing pollen into that enclosed world. She lays her eggs where she can and eventually dies inside; the fig breaks down what remains as it ripens, while another generation carries the pollen onward.
Nothing in this story becomes itself alone. The fig depends on the wasp, and the wasp depends on the fig—two lives so closely joined that one begins inside the ending of the other.
