Some people build entirely adult lives around emotional needs that never grew up.
Field Notes
We can learn to earn, dress, marry, schedule, and maintain a beautiful home while still asking another person to soothe the fears we carried out of childhood. A relationship may look mature because the life surrounding it is orderly, but beneath the teamwork, two frightened children may still be bargaining for protection, reassurance, and relief from being alone.
Growing older is automatic. Becoming emotionally adult is not. Until we learn to meet one another as whole people—not as parents, rescuers, mirrors, or shelters—our most polished relationships can remain childhood arrangements inside grown-up houses.
