There is a word for the feeling of returning to a place you love and realizing it no longer feels like the place you remember: solastalgia.
Unlike nostalgia, which is the longing for a place you’ve left behind, solastalgia is the quiet grief of watching a familiar place change while you are still here to witness it.
The tree remains.
The road widens.
The creek becomes a drainage channel.
Nothing changes all at once. The landscape simply becomes something different, until one day you realize the place you knew exists only in memory.
Sometimes what we grieve isn’t the loss of a place, but the loss of our relationship with it.
