A map gives every island a neat boundary, as though the edge between land and sea were a single line. But the real coastline is always changing. Waves arrive, retreat, divide, and overlap. Water covers what was land a moment before and leaves it again. Geometry can measure the simplified line we draw, but not the living boundary itself. Sometimes precision reveals the limits of our models more than the world they describe.
