Sometimes we become so captivated by the promise of an experience that we forget to notice the experience itself.
Field Notes
There is a strange habit in modern life of mistaking representations for reality. We admire the photograph more than the meal, the advertisement more than the object, the anticipation more than the moment that finally arrives. Much of our culture is designed to keep us wanting, because wanting lasts longer than satisfaction. Looking around, it’s worth asking how often we’re consuming the promise of fulfillment instead of the thing that was meant to nourish us in the first place.
