We are used to thinking of animals as the unfamiliar ones—the creatures we watch, name, photograph, and try to understand. But when an animal looks directly back, the arrangement changes. The fawn is not only being seen; it is seeing too, and the little girl becomes another mysterious body in the forest: upright, clothed, quiet, and impossible to fully understand.
Maybe being looked at by another species reminds us that we are not the neutral observers of the world. We are simply one kind of creature appearing inside the lives of many others
