A young tree competes for light.
An old tree creates shade.
The difference seems small, but it changes everything around it.
Beneath a mature canopy, temperatures cool. Moisture lingers longer in the soil. Birds nest. Insects gather. Seedlings emerge. Entire communities become possible because something large enough exists to shelter them.
The catalpa does not build a roof intentionally.
It simply grows.
Year after year, branch after branch, leaf after leaf, until one day a space appears beneath it where life can rest.
Many of the things that sustain us work this way.
Not through force.
Not through instruction.
But through presence.
Some forms of strength do not stand above others.
They create conditions in which others can thrive.
