Even wonder requires recovery.
Field Notes
Creativity is often imagined as inspiration, expression, insight, and flow. What we talk about less is the metabolic cost.
Reading. Making. Learning. Feeling. Imagining. Paying attention.
All of it consumes energy.
This isn’t about sadness or failure. It’s about reaching the edge of available attention. The books are open. The room is beautiful. The landscape is beautiful. Nothing is wrong.
And still, the mind has nothing left to give.
Many of the most creative people spend years believing exhaustion means they are doing something incorrectly. But every ecosystem has limits. Forests require winter. Fields require fallow periods. Rivers have seasons of flood and seasons of stillness.
The hidden ecology of creativity includes collapse, wandering, boredom, recovery, and days when the mind simply refuses another thought.
The work is not to overcome these periods.
The work is to recognize them as part of the process itself.
