Sometimes the hardest part of performing is realizing no one ever taught you how to stop.
Field Notes
Many people learn very earlythat love, approval, safety, or survivaldepends on performance.
Being impressive. Being easy. Being talented. Being beautiful. Being productive. Being emotionally manageable.
Over time, the performance stops feeling separate from the self.
The nervous system adapts.
Even exhaustion becomes choreographed.
This is not really about theater.
It is about the invisible labor of holding together a version of yourself for other people to consume.
The audience only sees the illuminated moment.
They do not see:
the dissociation, the pressure, the fragmentation, the rehearsed emotional regulation, or the body collapsing quietly backstage.
Eventually, many performers begin searching for something terrifying:
who they arewhen no one is watching.
